What does lighting a candle mean for you? Would you light one so you could eat a home-cooked meal by flickering candlelight, or for a Netflix binge? Does it go hand-in-hand with a warm bubble bath and a glass of red? (Unfortunately not in our house, as we don't have a tub, but a girl can dream!)

Whatever your reasons, people have been lighting candles for centuries; for light, for warmth, for comfort, for faith, ritual and ambiance. But in addition to the nostalgia and comfort that the scent and flame of a candle can bring, there are a myriad of other benefits to lighting them in your home.

Now, more than ever, it's time to take care of yourself, because your mental state, and your health and well-being are so very important.

So, before you next strike a light for your favourite candle, take a moment to breathe deep and to reflect on how it will help improve your state of being.

Increase your focus.

Aside from a great excuse to arrange candles around your workspace for aesthetic purposes, surrounding yourself with candles can help increase your focus. Greater productivity and pleasing on the eye? It's a win-win. Certain fragrances have also been known to stimulate your mind and really get you firing on all cylinders!

Remember positive memories.

With winter settling in there might be another reason why you want to burn a certain fragrance candle and cuddle on the couch lately. Maybe you’re feeling a little blue, and want to remember a good time. Or just feeling 'nostalgic.' Memories and emotions can easily be triggered by certain scents and provide a feeling of happiness if it coincides with a particular time in your life. Research indicates that smells are more likely to trigger vivid emotional memories for us, and can instantly lift your mood if you’re feeling down. Whether you’re experiencing sadness, grief, or just had a rough day, lighting a candle that reminds you of a happier time can make you feel better. Try not focus as much on little details of what you’re currently going through, enjoy simplicity and quiet moments.

Improve your mood.

If candles can evoke pleasant memories, they're just as likely to improve your mood! Next time you're feeling down, anxious or headachey (as a migraine sufferer, I can personally attest to the benefits of that last one!), try to lift your mood with a fragrance. Try something with citrus, lavender or pine for an extra special combo.

Set a morning or nightly ritual.

We've been lighting candles for centuries as rituals of one kind or another. Whether for faith or mental ritual, we bring candles into our homes to help set the mood during certain times of the day; to sooth our minds and souls. To set a calming home ritual for yourself, it’s a good idea to use them for particular moments: for bath-time perhaps, or for meditation, prayer, or yoga. This can enhance these meditative thoughts, so you can begin or end your day in a better state of mind. Creating rituals in your own home sets the tone for how you want to unwind or start your day.

Tip: light a candle or two when you’re doing your nightly skin-care routine, or when you’re drinking your morning cup of coffee. Keep your phone away during this moments! Practice being more mindful, and focus on the small amount of time you have just for yourself.

Provide a more restful sleep.

Although so tempting to catch-up on the events

of the world, using electronics right before you head to bed can disrupt your sleep cycle, even providing long-term negative health effects if you’re not getting your recommended seven to nine hours of sleep. The blue light that devices emit can potentially decrease your magnesium levels, which can make you feel less tired and more anxious.

So, try shutting your device and lights off before bedtime. Living by candlelight can help you feel calmer earlier in the evening, and work miracles toward resetting your natural sleep rhythms. When you’re not disrupted by technology, it’s easier to listen to your body and know when to shut down for the night. Living by candlelight during the evenings gives you a chance to be more mindful with your thoughts and actions; it can give you a more restful night’s sleep. Plus, it will shave a little bit off that monthly electric bill!

Lemongrass - helps wind down after a long day, eases anxiety, reduces stress, relaxing

Alleviate stress.

I'm willing to bet that you already have a few candles set aside for your self-care rituals, to ease stress and to implement calming properties into your home. Aromatherapists use certain fragrances to help with anxiety and depression, improve quality of life and sleep, and to ease some bodily symptoms like nausea and pain. So the next time you're feeling overwhelmed, take a moment, a deep breath, and light a candle with notes of bergamot, lavender, and sandalwood, and be thankful that you are you, and you are amazing.

Bergamot - reduces anxiety and fatigue, can relieve depression, enhances energy flow

Sandalwood - reduces anxiety, stimulates mood, soothing properties
